For Academie Duello there are many hotels in the area depending on what your budget is. Prices range from $60-300 plus. There is the Victorian hotel for around $70-80/night - 514 Homer street (about 3 minutes away) 604 681-6369

and the Comfort Inn at 654 Nelson street 604-605-4333 which would be about a ten min walk to Duello.

Of course, we don't endorse either of the latter hotels, only offer them as options for you. The Uptown is a bit far for walking to either Duello or Alpen, but there are excellent transit connections. We also encourage people to taxi share as it's another inexpensive alternative, and we will try to set up an exchange for people to line up rides this way in advance.

About Vancouver

Vancouver is the western most city in Canada, situated next to the pacific ocean. It has breathtaking views. There are three mountains in the city, with great ski hills. Vancouver has the finest Asian cuisine outside of Asia, and rivals New York city for the kinds and quality of food available. Some of the most breathtaking scenery in Canada is here, from pristine waters and bays, to huge tropical rain forests to towering mountains. Night life is also plentiful, with many 24 hour restaurants, and a vibrant art culture. Vancouver's proximity to the ocean gives it a moderate and pleasant climate year round. Average rainfall is higher than in the rest of inland provinces, and so Vancouver has a plethora of lush vegetation which can be greatly appreciated in the spring when plants are in bloom.

Getting around in Vancouver

There is an excellent light rail transit system called Skytrain, a state of the art automated train that runs in the major quadrants of Vancouver. The Canada line runs between Vancouver International airport and downtown, connecting to trains to other parts of the city. Tango Live's venues are situated close to Skytrain stations. Taxis are reasonably priced, and plentiful.

Some background: Just prior to 2000, Britain handed rule of Hong Kong back to the Chinese. At that time, many Hong Kong residents had relatives in Vancouver. Since Hong Kong had such a western attitude, there was some trepidation by the Hong Kong residents about the change in power, and many decided to immigrate to Canada, including Hong Kong's finest chefs. It is now said that Vancouver has the finest chinese food outside of China as a result of this.

Great places to eat:

  • 24 Hour Thai - Corner of Oak and Broadway (Thai) Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Congee Noodle House - Near Fraser street and Broadway (Chinese)
  • Landmark - 23rd and Cambie (Chinese)

  • 49th and Main - Indian district. Many great Indian restaurants and shops.
  • Commercial Street - This well known strip has many good restaurants. Megabyte Pizza at the corner of Commercial and Broadway inside the Skytrain station serves excellent pizza by the slice until approximantely 1 am.
